The practise of GMOs (Genetically modified organisms) in world is not more than forty years. Though it enables to cope the interest of the scientists for its huge potentiality. Now GMOs include yeast, bacteria, algae, plants and even animals and also available for a wide range of applications, including the production of pharmaceuticals, food, industrial chemicals, biofuel etc.
Through a report published by the researchers in Stanford University and University of California that, the after the discovery of the first genetically engineered bacterium in 1973, where human proteins somatostatin produced in Escherichia coli. It produced commercially in 1976 by Genentech. After that human insulin going to produce commercially in 1978 by the biotechnology industries. Those pharmaceuticals were welcomed by the government of the developed countries like USA, UK, Canada & so on.
Before 2005 the goverments of the developed countries does not approved the pharmaceuticals which produced from genetic modified animals or transgenic animal, those were restricted for the general mass. Only researchers can use those in lab. But by overcoming the hesitation in August 2006 European authorities approved the first drug produced by a transgenic animal which is ATryn. A therapeutic protein, produced in the milk of genetically modified goats. ATryn approved in USA in February, 2009.
Now GMOs are also available as pets. The GloFish fluorescent zebrafish is one of them having the capacity to indicate the presence of environmental toxins.
